Flossing Therapy

FASCIQ® Floss Bands are elastic latex compression bands used by trained professionals as part of mobility, movement and soft-tissue treatment.

During a flossing application, the selected area is wrapped with a band for a short period and then moved actively or passively. The combination of external compression and movement creates a distinctive mechanical stimulus around the joint, muscle or surrounding soft tissue.

FASCIQ® Floss Bands are 208 cm long and available in widths of 2.5 cm and 5 cm. Different thicknesses provide different levels of resistance, allowing the professional to select a band that matches the treatment area, technique and desired amount of compression.

What Happens During Flossing?

The band applies temporary circumferential compression to the selected area. While the band is in place, the client performs controlled active or passive movements chosen by the professional. The band is then removed and the area is reassessed.

The exact mechanisms behind flossing are still being investigated. Proposed explanations include the combined effect of compression and movement on sensory input, short-term tissue behaviour and the client’s perception of stiffness or restriction.

Flossing is best regarded as a brief treatment stimulus rather than a technique that permanently changes tissue structure. It may be incorporated into a broader mobility, rehabilitation or performance programme.

Flossing May Be Used to Support:

A temporary change in joint range of motion

Movement of an area that feels stiff or restricted

Warm-up and movement preparation

Sport- and rehabilitation-focused exercises

Short, controlled compression combined with active movement

Professional reassessment before and after a movement intervention

Research into tissue flossing is still developing, and results vary depending on the body area, application method and outcome being measured. Flossing should therefore be used as an addition to professional assessment and exercise, not as a replacement for diagnosis or medical treatment.

A Professional Flossing Application

There is no single protocol for every client or body area. A trained professional selects the band, compression and movement according to the treatment objective and individual response.

Assess

Identify the movement to be evaluated and check the skin, sensation and circulation before applying the band.

2

Wrap

Apply the selected band with overlapping layers and controlled pressure appropriate for the area.

3

Move

Use a brief series of active or professionally guided movements while continuously monitoring the response.

4

Remove & Reassess

Remove the band promptly and repeat the original movement assessment to evaluate the immediate response.

The pressure should feel firm but remain tolerable. Flossing is not intended to be a test of pain tolerance. The band must be removed immediately if adverse signs or symptoms appear.

How to Choose the Right Floss Band?

The appropriate band depends on the size of the body area and the resistance required. A wider band distributes compression over a larger surface, while a narrower band provides greater control on small or contoured areas.

2.5 cm width: designed for smaller areas such as the hand, wrist, foot or fingers

5 cm width: suitable for larger areas such as the arm, thigh, calf, knee or ankle

1 mm thickness: a thinner option with less resistance

1.5 mm thickness: a thicker option with greater resistance

The strongest band is not automatically the best choice. The professional should use the lowest effective level of compression and adapt the application to the person, body area and planned movement.

Important Considerations Before Flossing

FASCIQ® Floss Bands contain natural latex and must not be used in case of a latex allergy

Do not apply over open wounds, damaged skin, acute infection or unexplained swelling

Do not continue when the skin becomes pale or blue, or when numbness, tingling, coldness or sharp pain occurs

Avoid applications that could compromise circulation or place pressure on vulnerable nerves

Use after surgery or with acute injuries only when an appropriately qualified healthcare professional has confirmed that it is suitable

People with vascular disease, a suspected blood clot, impaired sensation, a bleeding disorder or medication that increases bruising or bleeding risk should seek medical advice before flossing. Professional users should always work within their training and scope of practice.
